ChatGPT's browser extension can now read and act in your open tabs
OpenAI upgraded the ChatGPT browser extension so ChatGPT can use the tabs you already have open: reading across them in Chat, and in Work controlling them to send messages, fill out forms and download files, with a side chat next to the page.
What happened
- On October 15, 2026, OpenAI's ChatGPT account announced it was "bringing the power of computer use to anyone who uses Chrome."
- In Chat, ChatGPT can look across your open tabs to answer; in Work, it can control tabs to send messages, fill out forms, download files and organize tab groups.
- A side chat puts the full ChatGPT app, with your conversation history, beside the page you're on in Chrome, Edge, Brave and Vivaldi.
- OpenAI's docs say ChatGPT can read or act on sites where you're already signed in, such as LinkedIn, Salesforce and Gmail. Browser control is set up from Settings > Computer Use in the ChatGPT desktop app, and availability can depend on rollout and workspace settings.
Why it matters: Routine browser chores like copying vendor details into a sheet or filling out forms can now be handed to ChatGPT inside your own logged-in browser. Because it acts as you on signed-in sites, review what it's about to submit or send.
